Visible where your customers search.

Local visibility improves the conditions for a business to be identified clearly and shown for relevant nearby searches – in map results, useful directories and on its own website. It rests on a well-maintained profile, consistent business facts and a genuine connection to the region.

The local map pack — where it is decided who gets the call

  1. Elektro Berger e.U. 4.8 ★ (127) · Electrician Neubaugasse 12 · Open until 17:00
  2. Stromkreis Installationen GmbH 4.6 ★ (54) · Electrician Burggasse 40 · Open until 18:00
  3. Kaiser Elektrotechnik 4.4 ★ (31) · Electrical engineering Lerchenfelder Straße 8 · Closing soon
  1. Name & category Use the name the business consistently uses in the real world, plus the most specific primary category for its core activity.
  2. Reviews Reviews give people additional context. Google also identifies review count and scores as possible components of the prominence of a business.
  3. Address & distance Distance from the person searching is a ranking factor. Correct location data allows the real location to be taken into account properly.
  4. Opening status Current opening hours help people make a dependable decision before they visit or call.

At a glance

The short answer first

Four facts about local visibility – without the agency prose.

What it is

Being found nearby

visibility wherever people search with a place in mind – in the map pack, in directories and in regional search results

Time to effect

No fixed timeframe

changes become visible at different times depending on review, competition and the starting point

A useful foundation

Identical company details

name, address and phone details should describe the same real business consistently; harmless formatting differences do not need to be forced

Cost

Profile & basic listings free

a business profile and basic listings in the major directories cost nothing – the effort goes into setting up, cleaning up and keeping them current

For search engines & AI assistants, in one sentence: Local visibility describes how easily a company can be found in searches that refer to a place – it comes from a well-kept Google Business Profile, company details (name, address, phone number) that are identical across every platform, and website content with a clear connection to the region.

The three places where local visibility is built

Local visibility is not a single measure but the interplay of three places. Search systems can combine information from several sources. Contradictions make a business harder to identify clearly; missing sources limit where people can find dependable information.

1 · Google Business Profile

The listing that appears in the map pack and alongside the search results. For many people it is the first contact with your business – often before your website.

2 · Directories & company details

Herold, WKO, Cylex and the rest. Consistent listings make it easier for people and search systems to identify the business clearly.

3 · Your own website

Your region, how to reach you and the area you cover belong in real content – not in a list of keywords in the footer. Add a LocalBusiness data record that machines can read.

Company details

Why contradictory details do more damage than missing ones

Contradictory information is an avoidable problem. That is why the work starts with a documented data check.

Criterion Typical starting point After the clean-up
Company name Mustermann GmbH, Mustermann Installationen, M. Mustermann – depending on the platform The real-world business name, used consistently everywhere
Address The old address in the directory, the new one on the website One spelling, one version – including staircase and flat number
Phone number A mobile number on Google, a landline on Herold The same main number everywhere, in international format
Opening hours Untouched since the last refurbishment Up to date, including public holidays and annual closures
Category Chosen too broadly, such as “services” A fitting primary category plus suitable secondary ones
Duplicate profiles Two listings from two decades, both half looked after Merged, or properly marked as closed
The honest answer: This clean-up is unglamorous groundwork and does not make for a pretty chart. It creates a reliable foundation, but it still needs maintenance after a move, a new phone number or changed opening hours.

Google Business Profile: what needs looking after

The Business Profile is free and brings together key details used in Google Search and Maps. What matters is not activity for its own sake, but information that is complete, accurate and kept current in everyday use.

A detailed guide to Google Business Profile: access, categories, maintenance and limits.

Categories & services

The primary category helps Google understand the core business. Additional categories and services should describe only what is genuinely offered.

Location & service area

A shop with a visible address and a service-area business are configured differently. The correct choice follows the real business model and Google’s eligibility rules.

Photos that show something

An exterior view to be recognised by, an interior view to build trust, team and work to be understood. Your own pictures rather than stock photos – that is a quality signal too.

Reviews with a system

Ask for them actively, reply promptly, stay factual even with criticism. The reply does not convince the one person; it convinces everyone who reads along later.

Posts & questions

Offers, holiday closures and news keep the profile alive. We fill the questions section in advance with the answers you are asked for all the time anyway.

Link rather than embed

We link to your profile instead of embedding Google Maps without review. Depending on the need, we use a simple map link or a data-minimising map setup. Whether consent is required depends on the specific implementation.

Business directories: which ones matter in Austria

Directory listings help people and search systems identify a business through consistent information. So the rule is: a few well-kept listings on relevant platforms – not as many as possible.

A detailed guide to Austrian business directories: selection, data checks and ongoing maintenance.

Herold.at

An Austrian business directory with company profiles and contact details. We assess whether a listing is useful based on the industry, audience and maintenance effort.

WKO Firmen A–Z

The official directory of the Austrian Economic Chamber. Member businesses can review and maintain the details already held there.

FirmenABC.at

Sorted by region, with editorially prepared company profiles. Worthwhile for businesses with a clearly defined catchment area.

Cylex.at

Easy to maintain, with reviews and a map view. Solid additional reach for smaller businesses and the trades.

wlw.at (Wer liefert was)

Specialised in B2B: industry, wholesale, technical services. Only relevant if your customers actually search there.

Bing Places & Apple Maps

Apple Business Connect and Bing Places can provide additional contact points. We check eligibility and relevance to the audience before setting up a profile.

How we go about it

Four stages – you always know what we are working on.

1 Week 1–2

Taking stock

We search for your company the way your customers do: which profiles exist, which details appear where, where something contradicts itself – and which duplicates have you been carrying around for years?

2 Week 2–5

Cleaning up company details

One binding record for name, address, phone number and opening hours, then aligned platform by platform. Duplicate profiles are merged or closed.

3 ongoing

Building out profile & website

Sharpening categories, adding services, adding photos, planning posts. On the website we add a regional connection in the text and LocalBusiness data for machines.

4 monthly

Monitor & refine

Calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile, plus how reviews are developing – briefly commented on rather than dumped as a graveyard of charts.

Honestly: Google names distance as one factor in local results, and a business cannot move its real location for a search. Accurate location, category, service and opening-hour information can still help the profile represent the business correctly.

Self-check · 1 minute

How visible are you in your region?

Five questions – answer them honestly, off the top of your head.

1. Do you know when your Google Business Profile was last edited?
2. Do Google, your legal notice and relevant directories clearly describe the same real business?
3. Have you replied to a review in the past three months?
4. Does your website name the places you actually work in – in the body text, not just in the footer?
5. Do you know how many people called you from the profile last month?

How to score: count your “yes” answers and compare them with the table.

  • 0–1 out of 5: Important local information is currently incomplete or inconsistent. Start with the business name, category, contact details and opening hours; visible changes follow on each platform’s own review and update schedule.
  • 2–3 out of 5: The basics are in place but not being looked after. In our experience your potential lies in the company details and the reviews – both can be caught up on in a manageable amount of time.
  • 4–5 out of 5: The main foundations are present. The next useful step is to verify categories, services, opening hours and the way reviews are requested, then document what changes over time.

What goes with local visibility

Local visibility does not stand on its own. It needs a technically sound website as its foundation – and in return it helps your company appear as a source in AI answers.

Search engine optimisation

The foundations local visibility builds on: the technology, content, structure and load time of your website.

AEO & GEO

Consistent business facts can also help answer systems classify a company. Which sources ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google use for a specific question cannot be guaranteed.

Websites with Kirby

Fast, accessible and with maps that do not track – so your regional focus is not undone by your own technology.

Frequently asked questions about local visibility

What is local visibility – and how does it differ from SEO?
Local visibility is the part of search engine optimisation aimed at searches that refer to a place – with ranking factors of its own. Classic SEO decides how your website appears in the organic results. Local visibility additionally decides whether you show up in the map pack – that box with a map and usually three listings that sits at the very top for searches with a place in them.
The map pack centres on information from the Business Profile. Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence as key criteria. The website can support that information with clear details about services and locations. The two still work together – a clean website with a real connection to the region supports the profile, and a well-kept profile brings people to the website.
How quickly does local visibility take effect?
There is no dependable timeframe; changes become visible at different times depending on review and the starting point. Google processes changes to the Business Profile and other sources on its own schedules. When a visible change follows depends on factors such as review, competition, distance and the starting point.
The other building blocks take longer. Cleaning up directory listings drags on, because some platforms review changes by hand. And a solid base of reviews grows over months – it cannot be sped up without becoming implausible.
Which factors determine where I appear in the map pack?
Relevance, distance and prominence – those are the three criteria Google itself names. Relevance: how well does your profile match the search? You steer that through categories, the services you list and complete details.
Distance: how far is your location from the person searching? You have almost no influence on this – correct location data is simply the prerequisite for Google calculating it properly at all.
Prominence: how present is your company elsewhere online? Reviews, directory listings, mentions and links all feed into this.
What is not on the list: there is no lever that overrides these three. Anyone selling you a guaranteed position is selling something they cannot deliver.
Do I need a Google Business Profile if I do not have a shop?
Yes – for businesses that travel to their customers, there is the profile with a service area instead of a public address. Google distinguishes between businesses that customers visit and those that go to the customer: plumbers, photographers, mobile care, on-site consulting.
In the second case you enter a service area instead of a visible address. Your address is needed for verification but is not shown publicly. This is explicitly provided for and is not a trick – anyone who instead gives a made-up address, or their home address as a shop, risks having the profile suspended.
How many business directories do I need?
A small, relevant selection that can be maintained reliably is more useful than a fixed number. Several consistent, reliable sources avoid conflicting signals and help people identify the right business. Google does not state a universal minimum number; relevance, accuracy and maintenance matter.
We therefore focus on platforms that are plausible for the audience and keep the facts consistent in substance. Harmless formatting differences are acceptable when every source clearly describes the same real business.
What do I do about a negative review?
Reply factually and promptly – the reply is addressed to everyone who reads it later. A review can only be removed if it breaches the guidelines: insults, obvious mix-ups, advertising, statements from someone who was never a customer. The way to do that is to report it to Google.
In every other case, the reply is the real tool. It does not convince the person who was annoyed – it gives useful context to other people who read the exchange. Stay calm, acknowledge the point, take the rest of the conversation offline.
Do I have to embed Google Maps on my website to be found locally?
No. What counts for your position is the business profile, not the embedded map. An embedded Google map can transfer data to Google as it loads. The consent required depends on the specific technical implementation and legal assessment.
We solve it differently: your business profile is linked rather than embedded, and for directions we choose a data-minimising map solution or a simple link. Your local visibility does not suffer for it – Google assesses your profile, not the presence of a Maps iframe on your page.
We have several locations – how does that work?
Each location gets its own profile and its own page on your website. One profile per location, with its own address, its own opening hours and – where there is one – its own direct dial number. Plus a separate location page on your website for each, with individual text, not the same template with the place name swapped out.
This is exactly where many multi-site structures fall down: near-identical location pages do not help visitors or search systems understand the differences. Each page should therefore contain real details about access, services and the features of that location.
What happens if we move or change our phone number?
Plan the change across all maintained profiles and update them in a documented sequence. Platform review times differ, so a short transition period is normal. A move is the moment that shows whether the data was being looked after. That is why we work from a list of every place your company details appear: business profile, directories, website, legal notice, social profiles, invoice templates.
When something changes, that list is worked through and the old address is overwritten in the existing profile rather than a second profile being created. Platforms apply changes on different schedules. We therefore follow up and document outstanding corrections instead of promising a fixed completion date.
