Accessibility Statement

Accessibility is not an afterthought for us – it is how we work: we implement it in code for our clients. Our own website is held to the same standard. Whether finkbrot.at is subject to the statement obligation of the Austrian Accessibility Act (BaFG) depends on the legal classification of our services. We publish this statement either way, because we believe that whoever sells accessibility should show it.

What we align with

This website follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, conformance level AA. That is our own working basis, not the wording of a statute: the Austrian Accessibility Act (BaFG) names no technical standard but presumes conformity — rebuttably — where harmonised standards are met. The relevant EN 301 549 V3.2.1 (2021-03) is harmonised under the Web Accessibility Directive (EU) 2016/2102 and itself refers to WCAG 2.1 AA; we deliberately work to the newer version.

On text contrast we go beyond the AA requirement: on the light and dark base surfaces body text reaches at least 10:1, and on the coloured accent surfaces (white text on teal) at least 7:1 — level AAA throughout. All other text colours on those surfaces — secondary text, links, accent — sit at 4.9:1 or above and thus exceed the AA requirement of 4.5:1. These values hold in both colour schemes, light and dark.

What is implemented

  • Full keyboard operability, visible focus rings and skip links (“skip to content”)
  • Semantic structure with landmarks, heading hierarchy and ARIA patterns (e.g. tabs, disclosure sections, live regions in interactive tools)
  • Colour contrast checked with the WCAG formula — we show the maths openly in our contrast tool
  • Animations respect the “reduce motion” system setting (prefers-reduced-motion) and pause outside the viewport
  • Clear, plain language; forms with labels, plain-text error messages and no time pressure
  • Fonts and icons hosted locally — no third-party content that could bring its own barriers
  • A dark colour scheme that follows your system setting

How we test

We test continuously in-house: with the keyboard, with screen readers, with automated tools (including Lighthouse) and with a contrast check that recalculates the text colours set in the CSS against every base surface in both colour schemes on each build — currently 118 combinations, plus 30 separately maintained pairs. 56 declarations using gradients, transparency or color-mix cannot be calculated statically and are checked by hand; 112 legacy cases are being worked through step by step. There is no external certification; this statement describes the state of our own ongoing testing.

Known limitations

Perfect is never finished. Some older content (such as image detail pages in the magazine archive) is being brought up to the same standard step by step. If you notice something we missed, we would love to hear about it.

Fixed on 14 August 2026: Our accent colour reached only 4.33:1 as small text on light surfaces, just below the AA requirement of 4.5:1; in the dark colour scheme the value was lower still. We had not noticed because our automated check only tested the opposite direction — white text on the accent surface. The foreground accent is now a separate token with at least 5:1 in both colour schemes, and the check list covers both directions. We are writing this down because a statement that never reports anything is worth nothing.
