Click-Through Rate (CTR)

The click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click a search result, an ad or a link, measured against everyone who saw that result (impressions). In organic search the tendency is clear: the higher the position and the more appealing the title tag and meta description, the higher the CTR.

In practice

Google Search Console shows the CTR per page and per query, which you can compare with the level typical for that position. If it sits well below, that often points to an unappealing title tag or a weak meta description – systematically testing different wording is worthwhile here. One caveat for expectations: SERP features such as AI summaries or featured snippets can lower the CTR, because users sometimes get the answer without clicking at all.
