Whitepaper

A whitepaper is a longer, fact-based content format, usually a PDF, that examines a specialist topic or an audience problem in depth and offers well-founded approaches to solving it. Unlike promotional formats, the focus is on informative value backed by data or studies, which is why whitepapers are used mainly in B2B content marketing.

In practice

A whitepaper is often offered as gated content: prospects receive the download in exchange for contact details submitted through a form, which produces qualified leads for further nurturing. For that to work, the content has to deliver genuine value and must not read like advertising in disguise. Promotion through a dedicated landing page, the newsletter and social media snippets that tease central findings has proven effective. Whitepapers suit products that need explaining and complex B2B topics, and are less suited to quick B2C purchase decisions.
