Prize Draws on Social Networks
A prize draw on social networks is a time-limited campaign in which participants gain a chance to win by performing an action such as leaving a comment or following a profile. In Austria, competition and data protection requirements as well as the participation rules of the platform concerned apply above all.
In practice
Publish complete terms of participation covering the period, eligibility, the prize, how winners are determined and how data is processed, and link to them from your website. Note that platforms impose their own rules and partly prohibit mechanics such as requiring people to tag others or share to private profiles; a breach can lead to the post being removed. As long as no stake is required to take part, there is usually no gambling within the meaning of the Austrian Gaming Act; as soon as you require a contribution from participants, you should have that clarified by a solicitor beforehand. Followers gained purely through prize draws are usually worthless, since they leave afterwards and distort your interaction rate for good. Campaigns with a prize attractive only to your own audience work better.
