GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimising content so that generative AI systems draw on it when composing their own summarised answers – in contrast to AEO, which is aimed more at verbatim citation in answer systems.
In practice
AEO and GEO overlap heavily in practice: both benefit from clear facts, solid source references, unambiguous use of terminology and structured data. GEO additionally emphasises topical authority across several related pieces of content, so that an AI system recognises a website as a reliable source of knowledge for a whole subject area.
