Accessibility Statement
An accessibility statement is a page documenting the current accessibility status of a digital service, its known limitations and a way to contact the operator with feedback. For public sector bodies in Austria it is mandatory under section 4 of the Web Accessibility Act; private service providers are subject to a related but differently framed information duty under the Accessibility Act (BaFG).
In practice
The statement should be updated regularly and should name specifically which WCAG conformance level (AA, for example) was tested against and which content is excluded. A working contact option belongs in it so that users can report barriers they encounter. The two legal frameworks need to be kept apart: public sector bodies publish the statement under the Web Accessibility Act as a page of its own, usually linked somewhere easy to find in the footer. The BaFG does not require a page of that name, but instead calls for a description under section 14(2) in conjunction with Annex 3 of how the service meets the accessibility requirements – in the general terms and conditions or a comparable document. Many companies publish both together; whether that is sufficient in an individual case should be clarified legally if in doubt.
