Tracking & Third-Party Cookies

Tracking is the systematic recording of user behaviour on a website, frequently by means of third-party cookies – cookies set not by the website being visited but by embedded third-party services such as analytics or advertising tools.

In practice

Many browsers now block third-party cookies by default or limit how long they survive, which reduces the accuracy of established tracking methods. More data-minimising alternatives such as server-side tracking or aggregated, cookieless analytics tools are gaining importance as a result.
