Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence in which systems improve their performance on a task by learning patterns from data instead of following hard-coded rules alone.
In practice
Machine learning is the underlying technology behind today's search ranking systems, spam filters, recommendation algorithms and large language models. For companies, what usually matters is less how a model learns in detail than which data it uses and what results that produces in practice, for example in automated rankings or personalisation.
