Keyword Cannibalization
Keyword cannibalization occurs when multiple pages on the same website compete for the same keyword, causing them to undermine each other’s rankings. As a result, Google may struggle to identify the most relevant page, leading to poor performance across all affected URLs.
Common causes include:
- several blog posts or landing pages targeting similar keywords,
- duplicate or thin content across different URLs,
- lack of a clear keyword and content strategy.
Example:
Your agency has two articles that both rank for “SEO audit checklist”, but neither performs well because Google alternates between them.
A solid keyword strategy …
- eliminates internal competition for rankings,
- strengthens topical authority of individual pages,
- improves internal linking structure,
- leads to higher rankings and better CTR.
Note: Keyword cannibalization can be resolved with content audits, keyword mapping, and strategic consolidation – e.g., by merging, redirecting, or refocusing pages.
