Design handoff is the structured transfer of a design to development. It covers not only the screens but also spacing, colour and type values, every element state such as hover, error or loading, the behaviour across screen widths, and notes on reading order and labelling for assistive technologies.
In practice
In our experience the most expensive rework originates here: a design shows the ideal case, but reality also needs the empty list, the very long company name, the form error message and the missing product image. Insist that these cases are designed before development starts rather than improvised during build. Clarify early who supplies the final copy, because placeholder text routinely hides layout problems. A good handoff includes a short acceptance checklist you can test the result against instead of relying on instinct. And it ends not at launch but with a documented answer to the question of who builds new pages from now on.
