EU Hosting (Data Residency)
EU hosting means operating servers and storing data within the European Union or the European Economic Area, in order to avoid transferring data to third countries with a potentially lower level of data protection.
In practice
Server location is a frequently underrated data protection and trust signal: it simplifies the GDPR argument towards customers and noticeably reduces the legal review effort for international data transfers, provided that hosting, email and embedded third-party services all sit consistently within the EU. One caveat: the server location alone does not settle the question of a third-country transfer. Where the provider is subject to the law of a third country, or where support and administration access takes place from there, a transfer within the meaning of Chapter V GDPR may still exist despite an EU data centre, and it needs safeguards of its own.
