Generative AI refers to AI systems that create new content such as text, images, audio or code, rather than merely classifying or analysing existing data; large language models and text-to-image models are both examples of it.
In practice
Generative AI is the umbrella term that covers language models, chatbots and text-to-image tools alike. For anyone starting out, the term is a good point of departure before moving on to more specific concepts such as LLM, RAG or multimodal AI.
