GA4 BigQuery Export

The GA4 BigQuery export automatically transfers all raw, unfiltered event data from a Google Analytics 4 property into Google BigQuery, in contrast to the pre-processed and partly sampled standard reports in the GA4 interface. Free GA4 properties can export up to one million events per day; for Analytics 360 properties Google puts the daily limit at up to 20 billion events. A streaming export is available in addition; Google describes it explicitly as a "best-effort service" with no completeness guarantee, which may contain data gaps and incurs additional BigQuery costs of USD 0.05 per gigabyte. In BigQuery you can query the raw data with SQL as you wish, join it with CRM or offline data and process it further in tools such as Looker Studio or Power BI.

In practice

For agencies the BigQuery export is the obvious route as soon as standard GA4 reports reach their limits – with complex multi-touch analyses, sampling problems on large data volumes, or the wish to join GA4 events with CRM, shop or offline data. You set it up directly in the GA4 property settings under “BigQuery links”; it needs editor rights in GA4 and owner access to a Google Cloud project with a payment method on file. BigQuery itself creates ongoing costs for storage and queries, although with small data volumes these usually stay in the region of cents; a free sandbox tier exists with restrictions. For SMEs the export pays off above all in combination with a KPI dashboard that brings raw data from BigQuery together with other sources (Google Ads, Meta, ERP) into consolidated reporting. One caveat: without data analysis know-how the raw data export remains unused potential – the investment only pays off with a clear analysis roadmap.
